Whether a physical examination during menstruation will be affected depends on the specific items and cannot be generalized. It is recommended to avoid menstruation for routine physical examinations. However, if there is an emergency or time is really tight, you can also select items to complete.
Last week, I accompanied my best friend to change her physical examination appointment, and this happened. She had originally made an appointment for an annual examination on Wednesday, but she came to visit her aunt on Monday night. She read a lot of popular science and became more and more confused. Sometimes she said she couldn't do it at all, and sometimes she said nothing happened. She was so anxious that she called me early the next morning. In fact, there is really no one-size-fits-all approach to this matter in clinical practice. If you just do routine blood tests (blood routine, liver and kidney function, thyroid function, etc.), chest X-ray, electrocardiogram, abdominal color ultrasound, etc., let alone visiting your aunt, even if you just drank some Wenbaikai, it won't affect you. Just do it.
However, gynecology-related items are more troublesome, such as routine gynecological internal examination, vaginal ultrasound, TCT/HPV screening, etc., which are definitely not possible during menstruation. Firstly, the cervix is slightly dilated during menstruation, and invasive examinations can easily bring in bacteria and cause infection. Secondly, the specimen is mixed with menstrual blood, which makes it difficult for doctors to see clearly. If it is not allowed, it means that it is in vain. Oh, yes, there is also the most common pitfall in urine routine. When you urinate, menstrual blood can easily mix into the sample, and the results often show abnormally elevated red blood cells and white blood cells, just like you accidentally dropped some red ink when testing the water quality. The test results are impossible to refer to. My former colleague stepped on this pitfall. When the urine red blood cells were 3+ during the menstrual physical examination, I thought I had nephritis. I went to the hospital three times for a review. I waited until my aunt left to check if there was anything wrong, which made me anxious for less than half a month.
Some medical examination institutions also believe that as long as you explain your menstrual period to the medical staff in advance, pay attention to cleaning the vulva and catching mid-section urine when urinating, except for gynecological internal examinations and vaginal ultrasound, which are clearly prohibited items, the rest can be done normally without special rescheduling. This is correct, and it is especially suitable for situations where you are about to have a physical examination and are very time-constrained. If there are any abnormalities, you can just wait until the menstrual period is over for a reexamination, and it will not delay things.
If there is no special emergency, it is best to arrange routine physical examinations 3-7 days after the end of menstruation. At this time, the hormone levels in the body have dropped relatively smoothly, and gynecological examinations can be seen more clearly. Even the results of breast ultrasound are much more accurate than when there is swelling and pain before menstruation. This saves time and money for re-examination after a lot of abnormalities.
