The corpus luteum in the ovary does not necessarily mean pregnancy. The corpus luteum is a physiological structure formed after ovulation, which may indicate that the ovary is in the luteal phase or early pregnancy.
After a woman ovulates, the follicle wall collapses to form the corpus luteum, which mainly secretes progesterone to maintain the stability of the endometrium. In a non-pregnant state, the corpus luteum will shrink and degenerate after 12-14 days, forming a corpus albicans and triggering menstruation. Normal women of childbearing age will experience the formation and regression of the corpus luteum in each menstrual cycle. Ultrasound examination shows a cystic structure with a diameter of 15-30 mm in the ovary, with clear borders and rich blood flow signals.
If pregnancy is successful, the human chorionic gonadotropin secreted by the embryonic villi will support the continued development of the corpus luteum into the corpus luteum of pregnancy, maintaining early pregnancy hormone secretion until the placenta is formed. At this time, the corpus luteum may increase to more than 50 mm, and some pregnant women may experience a slight feeling of distension in the lower abdomen. However, the presence of the corpus luteum cannot be used alone as a basis for pregnancy diagnosis. It needs to be confirmed by blood human chorionic gonadotropin testing or ultrasound examination.
It is recommended that women of childbearing age undergo routine gynecological ultrasound examination to understand the status of their ovaries. Early pregnancy testing can be performed when menstruation is delayed and the corpus luteum persists. Pay attention to record changes in menstrual cycles in daily life and avoid strenuous exercise that may cause corpus luteum rupture and bleeding.
