Tu Youyou’s Nobel Prize Lecture Speech Artemisinin is a gift from traditional Chinese medicine to the world

In her keynote speech, Tu Youyou expressed her gratitude to the Swedish Nobel Prize Committee for awarding the 2015 Nobel Prize in Medicine to her, and emphasized that the Nobel Prize is not only a personal honor for her, but also an encouragement to Chinese scientists. She also said that artemisinin is a gift from traditional Chinese medicine to the world.

In her speech, Tu Youyou also described the arduous process of Chinese scientists discovering artemisinin 40 years ago. Due to the very limited scientific research conditions in China a few decades ago, the discovery of artemisinin was not easy. In the 1980s, thousands of malaria patients in China had been effectively treated with artemisinin and its derivatives. Tu Youyou also expressed her gratitude to the country for its trust and emphasized the value of traditional Chinese medicine.

When talking about the importance of teamwork in her research process, Tu Youyou emphasized the significance of team perseverance, and once again sincerely thanked all members of the traditional Chinese medicine team engaged in the 523 anti-malarial project, remembering their active investment and special contributions, thanked the national 523 project units for their full collaboration, congratulated colleagues in the collaborative units for their multi-faceted achievements and dedicated services to malaria patients, and once again paid tribute to the tireless efforts of the national 523 office in organizing anti-malarial projects. Tu Youyou said: “Without the team spirit of everyone’s selfless cooperation, it would be impossible to contribute artemisinin to the world in the short term. ”

Finally, Tu Youyou quoted "If you want to see farther, reach a higher level" as the conclusion of the speech, and wished the scientific researchers present to reach a higher level in their respective research fields.

Throughout her keynote speech, Tu Youyou quoted the famous saying of chemist Lujekest, "Opportunity favors the prepared", the ancient Chinese saying "Everything in the past is a prelude", and finally quoted the end of an ancient Chinese poem. The wonderful speech won warm applause from the audience.
